Southern Spain basks in a Mediterranean climate with scorching summers, whilst also possessing some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, where you can relax and soak up the rays. The North of the country is normally much cooler than the South, as a result it’s a region of lush greenery and dramatic mountains, however is still known to heat up considerably in the summer.

Explore The Catalan Capital & Gaudi’s Temple, Sagrada Familia

Barcelona, the proud capital of Catalonia is a buzzing and non-stop city which boasts some of the mostly highly rated tapas bars in Spain, and has dozens of historical and modern monuments and architectural points of interest.

Top of the list is the Sagrada Familia, a Roman Catholic cathedral which has been in construction since 1882 and is soon due for completion. The world renowned architect Gaudi managed the project from 1883 onwards right up until his death and devoted his life to the work. The building which draws on gothic & curvilinear Art Nouveau has World Heritage status and really has to be seen to be fully appreciated.

Culture

The Spanish are renown for being friendly, open minded and easy to talk to, so much so there is always a buzz outside bars and restaurants, with a distinct café culture, due to their love of socialising and getting together, over drinks and food.

Food is the beating heart of Spanish culture, with almost all social occasions enjoyed over a meal. Lunches are often the biggest meal of the day, often lasting numerous hours, almost always a hot meal, with many bars offering a menu of the day (menú del día) that consists of an appetizer, main dish, drink, and dessert, this is normally not eaten before 1.30pm.

Siesta - During lunch many shops and businesses close, from approximately 2pm until 5pm, during which time many people go to a bar or restaurant to have lunch.

Owing to the large lunch, evening meals start late, from around 10pm onwards, when the weather is cooler, and consist of small plates known as tapas.

Etiquette

Whilst engaging in conversation it is not uncommon to use physical contact to emphasis emotion, in Spain this is an accepted form of communication.

Tipping is widely accepted in Spain, locals are small tippers often leaving around 5% of the bills total amount, so work to that figure. It is common to tip taxi drivers and also hotel porters, so bear that in mind on your trip.

Greetings & Language

If you’re looking to socialise or greet your fellow Spaniards whilst away on holiday, here are a few handy phrases to help you on your travels.

To say hello, it’s ‘hola’, before lunch say ‘Buenos días’ which means good morning, whilst ‘Buenos tardes’ is good night.

Be sure not to forget your please and thank yous, to say please it’s ‘Por Favor’ and thank you is ‘gracias’.

Finally if you’re wanting to order a drink, sangria for example, seeming as though we are in Spain, its ‘Por favor puedo pedir una jarra de sangria’ which translates to ‘please may I order a jug of sangría.
