Portugal with an exceptional range of different landscapes just short distance away, lots of leisure activities and a unique cultural heritage, where tradition and modernity blend together in perfect harmony. Its superb cuisine, fine wines and hospitable people makes this a tourist paradise of the highest quality.

Situated in the south west of Europe, just two and half hours flight from the UK makes it an ideal short break spot throughout the year to discover the charming beauty of this country.

Portugal is often heralded as one of the warmest countries in Europe, long been famed for its clear blue skies and sunny climate making it the perfect getaway during both the summer and winter months.

Due to its geographical location at the south-western end of Europe, Portugal enjoys a Mediterranean climate throughout the year. In the North of the country, temperatures are milder than its southern-counterpart, making it an ideal destination for those who prefer to avoid high heat during the summer months. Rainfall is more common in the North, providing a lush green landscape, with Peneda-Geres National Park located in this region - the only national park in the country.

The hottest temperatures can be found in Central Portugal with the mercury rising over 40 degrees Celsius and hardly any rain, and in Winter they stay around 10 degrees Celsius, there is some chance of rain but its frequent to have sunny days. On the Algarve, in the South at Albufeira, Praia da Luz, or Faro summer brings clear azure blue skies, endless hours of sunshine and high temperatures, with a nice breeze that blows in from the Atlantic ocean. It is also the perfect holiday destination to catch some winter sun, with mild temperatures, although its slightly wetter, it’s still the perfect destination to escape those winter blues.

Culture

The Portuguese are a very friendly and modest nation, welcoming all that step foot on and visit its land.

Good food, wine and family make up the backbone of Portuguese culture, with hospitality and open heartedness never failing to capture many a traveller’s heart. Restaurants and bars are lively and bustling places, prefect for soaking up the atmosphere, whilst enjoying the local cuisine. Owing to its vast shoreline, a diet of fresh seafood is seen on the majority of menus, and in many restaurants, you choose from the catch of the day.

Etiquette

The Portuguese are a relatively conserved nation therefore boisterous behaviours can often be frowned upon. It’s customary to shake hands with people who you don’t happen to know that well, whilst for those acquaintances you do know well, embracing and kissing on each cheek from right to left is widely accepted.

Whilst eating out in Portugal a clean plate signals that you have enjoyed the food, therefore it is considered polite to leave as little food on your plate as possible.

Most service staff are paid low wages relying on tips to supplement their wages, therefore it is customary to leave a 10% tip to your bill, in addition to more if you feel the level of service you received was over an above.

Greetings & Language

If you’re looking to socialise whilst on holiday, it’s handy to have a few simple phrases on hand to converse with the locals.

To say hello, it’s ‘ola’, before lunch say ‘bom dia’ meaning good morning, whilst ‘boi noite’ means good night.

Be sure not to forget your please and thank yous, to say thank you it’s ‘obrigado’ and please is ‘por favour’. When leaving goodbye is ‘tchau’.
