A favourite means of discovery is to sail Kerala's unique houseboats along the breathtakingly beautiful backwaters, passing villages, paddy fields and tropical palm groves; an amazing way to experience Kerala's countryside.

We stay at the Kovalam Beach, 16kms south of Thiruvananthapuram, (Trivandrum) the capital of Kerala. It consists of silvery white sands, with coconut palm fringed beaches separated by rocky highlands. The locals are friendly; the weather is obliging and balmy. From there it's a short cruise to kanyakumari, where the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal meet, where you can enjoy the breathtaking site of a simultaneous sunset and moonrise.

Houseboat
A houseboat offers the opportunity of a lifetime to view the scenic beauty of Kerala by sailing. Houseboats are rice boats which have been converted in an authentic, rustic way. Most of them have two cabins, plus a sit out, sundeck, bedroom with mosquito net and private bathroom with a WC. In the evening the boat is lit by oil lamps. Thatched awnings allow the cooling breezes to flow in. They are simply furnished and have a thatched covered lounge/dining area. Relish the traditional Kerala cuisine and dishes made from local fish. There is ample opportunity to go ashore and take in a quick bottle of fresh sweet toddy from a local pub.
