Croatia almost offers something for everyone. Most Croatian resorts offer a spectacular choice of water sports such as water-skiing, boats rides, while scuba diving in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic is a “must”. Sports such as tennis, table tennis, bowling, mini-golf and volleyball are just as popular. Mountain-climbing is also a local tradition dating back to the early 1800s with a stunning unspoilt landscape, this is hiker’s paradise. Almost every large resort on the Adriatic coast organises its own summer festivals, there are different open-air concerts, fisherman’s nights and folk dancing shows to enjoy. Dancing is a major form of entertainment and there are plenty of bars and discos which stay open late. Many larger hotels organise their own entertainment, although it’s advisable to check when it is offered.
The Kornati National Park
The group of 140 islands, islets and reefs, where the blue colour of the sea makes a perfect contrast to the white-grey rocky islands.
Kornati - Interesting things to see:
Islet of Taljuric - because of its oval shape it looks like a plate. It is dangerous for boats, because it is often covered with water.
Island Piskera - is the second largest island in the national park, it was once the main fishing centre on the Kornati islands with a warehouse for salted fish.
Mala (little) Proversa – is a shallow passage between Dugi (long) island and the island of Katine. Ancient Roman ruins approximately 90m long are visible in the sea, which were once above sea level.
Bay of Spinuta - in the bay, leftover wall ruins are visible of an Ancient Roman salt factory or of a fish cultivating pond.
Telaščica Nature Park, the island of Dugi otok
This excursion site abounds with marine and terrestrial flora and fauna such as dolphins, bats and endemic birds. Located within the park is lake Mir, at an altitude of 146m above sea level. The changing of the tides in the lake is an interesting phenomenon, which is closely connected to the changing of the tide in the sea, the lakes changes tides as the sea, with a few hours difference.
Food & Drink
Eating out is inexpensive and delicious. There is a huge variety of local and international dishes to enjoy. This area of the Adriatic is fish lovers’ paradise with over 370 species cooked in almost as many ways. ”Brodet”, a dish made of several kinds of fish, deserves special attention. Another excellent choice is the ”Prsut”, the dark smoked Dalmatian ham, the paprika flavoured salami or the mature domestic cheeses.
The wine-growing region of Dalmatia produces some great white and red wines and there are some interesting local lagers you should definitely sample.
Shopping
Popular local gifts include lacework, embroidered goods, brandies and locally made pottery.
